Publication Day! A Little Christmas Rivalry is out now!

A Little Christmas Romance
A man and a woman in a snowy landscape. back to back and looking over their shoulders at each other

I absolutely LOVED writing this book. It actually began life as a steamy short story for a Christmas anthology and it was when I delved into the love interests’ backstory that I realised it was so much more – a dual PoV love story about two expats living in London.

Sophie Reid fell in love with her husband, Daniel, while on holiday in London 11 years ago. After a whirlwind romance, she dropped her life in Melbourne, moved across the world to marry him and became a mum at 23 – only to find herself widowed and far from home by 27. With her mother-in-law, Connie, and 10-year-old, Harlow, keeping her busy, she only has time for family, work, and a very rich (sexual) fantasy life.

Drew Parker discovered 3 months before his wedding that his bride-to-be and best friend were sleeping together behind his back. After calling off the wedding, he jetted over to London where his brother, sister-in-law and young niece lived. Now he’s a love-shy ad exec and dutiful uncle.

And they are work rivals…

It’s a heartfelt, laugh-out-loud funny, Christmassy romcom that will have you turning the pages.

The blurb

🌟It’s the most wonderful time of the year… to win. 🌟

Sophie Reid is at the top of her game. A brilliant advertising exec and a devoted single mum, she’s this close to landing the biggest campaign of her career – the coveted Christmas ad for Hargreaves, the retail giant.

Her biggest rival? Arrogant lone wolf Drew Parker, who won the campaign last year – and the year before. If only he weren’t so hot, maybe Sophie could get him out of her head.

Drew knows exactly what Sophie thinks of him, but he doesn’t care. He’s here to win.

But when they’re forced to work together on the campaign, the lines between rivalry and attraction begin to blur.

As the festive season draws nearer, work takes them to snow-covered Switzerland – and those guarded, icy walls begin to melt. Could this Christmas be the start of something neither of them saw coming?

Diary of a Menopausal Romcom Author Part 3: UK & What’s happening

Hi – me again. Last post for the week, I promise.

The 3rd part of our trip took us to the UK for time with the fam, catch ups with friends and a couple of bookish events.

Family is everything and spending proper time with my sis Victoria, brother-in-law Mark and Alex, our nephew (plus their three cats) was brilliant fun. And we caught up with our great aunt Joan, who at 94 is still sharp and funny (and always saves room for dessert). Alex who was 13 the last time we saw him and about my height has shot up to 6 feet. But most importantly, at 15, he’s the same loving, smart and (at times) hilarious boy we’ve always known.

They fam lives on the canals southeast of Rugby and Ben and I walked them every day – always something new to see and someone new to meet, like Mavis, Queen of the Canals (the wee tiny little puppy who rides on the top of her canal boat). It’s a quintessentially English town and we did quintessentially English things, like having picky bits for tea (Mark’s incredible spread) and going to the garden centre to buy lavender.

Next up were bookish events.

Fellow author Kim Nash invited me and Kiley Dunbar to her bookshop Fiction and Fairy Lights for a reader event and it was brilliant fun. I’d met them both before and they are such gorgeous and talented women. Great chat and met lots of new readers (one of the best parts of being an author).

The following week, we headed east to attend the Hertfordshire library event for Zoë Folbigg (writing as Victoria Prince) and Kathleen Whyman. When I originally told them I was coming, they didn’t believe me (because I live across the world) but it was a wonderful event and brilliant to catch up – and spend time with my sis and one of my oldest friends, Suzi, who we stayed with.

So, a fabulous trip to the UK, but it’s also good to be home in Denmark – even though it’s winter and often cold and raining, because it’s also beautiful and sunny sometimes (and we get to play with Fergus, my parent’s dog).

And in between gardening, yoga and catching up with my parents and our friends, I’m back to work.

In a couple of weeks, I’m presenting at the Romance Writers of Australia conference in Darwin. It’s my first time presenting for RWA and I am super excited. I am also looking forward seeing author friends, learning about writing craft and the publishing biz (always learning!), dancing at the gala with Ben – and it’s our first trip to Darwin, so that’s a plus.

I’m also working on Book 9 for Boldwood, plus a secret side project that I am in love with, and I’ve got a couple of manuscript assessments on my desk as well. My Aussie women’s fiction book is on submission – all appendages crossed it finds the perfect home – and I am already plotting Boldwood book 10 (the one set in Prague).

I am BUSY!

But I do love my job.

Okay, enough about me. Get back to your day and I hope it’s a good one.

Diary of a Menopausal Romcom Author Part 2: Greece

Okay, yes, I am posting twice in a day! But I’ve carved out time amid everything else going on and I didn’t want you to miss out on my recent trip to Greece, which still owns a piece of my heart.

After a week in Prague, Ben and I flew to Greece, spending 4 nights on our own on the island of Naxos, where we started to fall for each other on a sailing trip that started in Santorini 20 years ago.

Naxos is truly gorgeous – I mean gorgeous. With (special) thanks to Ben who captured that stunning sunset.

And I also did a little bookish promo… I have two books that include Naxos as a setting: One Summer in Santorini and My Big Greek Island Exscape. So we rented a car for a day and did a little road trip. First up was the Eggares Olive Press which features in My Big Greek Island Exscape. We did the tour – fascinating stuff – and tasted the many (many) varieties of olives, including olive oil cake with olive oil ice cream. And when I introduced myself to the woman who runs the place, she agreed to a photo with my book and asked for one with me for their Insta.

Next up was Matina and Stavros’ Taverna in Koronos. Ben and I went there 20 years ago and we had a friend write Matina a message in Greek to tell her who we were, and that she inspired a character in One Summer in Santorini. We got some pics with her and then had the most delicious lunch (which she wouldn’t let us pay for). Twenty years ago, there was no menu – just what she had cooked that day – but now she’s expanded, having been featured in travel magazines and highly rated on TripAdvisor (we were lucky to get a table).

After Naxos, we joined up with our friends and long-time skipper (and treasured mate) Patrick for a week of sailing around the Cyclades. Ben and I knew the other three couples – we planned the trip and brought everyone together – but they didn’t know each other! It was brilliant – friendships forged on the sometimes rough, sometimes glassy Aegean Sea. And, as always when travelling in the Greek Islands, the days seem long but the week goes by fast. But I did find time for a little holiday romance reading 😉.

Each day, we swam off the boat and explored the islands. Folegandros was a standout for me. If you haven’t been and want an experience like Santorini but with less crowds, then I can highly recommend it.

To our lovely friends who made this trip so incredible (Patrick our skipper, Elaine and Rick, Jeff and Linda, and Jake and Ruth).

I will always remember the sisterhood of the travelling bikini top, Rick and Ruth’s rocks, Elaine’s child-sized swimming goggles, the Merman on the rock, in Linda we trust, Jeff’s hair looking better than everyone’s, managing to make cocktails out of almost anything, who’s ‘that guy’ today?, doing ‘boat stuff’ together, swimming off the boat (never once got my hair wet), delish dinners out and a starlit BBQ on the beach (with a close rock skipping comp), a-bit-of-everything lunches, the Chad, cliff jumping, goats, goats and more goats, MFR (more f*cking ruins), fancy-schmancy mega-yacht people, the nail-biting saga of the UK visa!, wonderful stories, lots of laughter, and one of the best weeks of my life.

Thank you, all. And an extra huge thanks to Ben who took a lot of these shots (not just the ones I’m in).

Diary of a Menopausal Romcom Author Part 1: Prague

It’s been a minute!

Time to catch you up on what I’ve been doing, my works in progress and what’s on the horizon.

Ben and I just got back from 5 weeks in Europe and the UK, and we’re now settling back into mid-winter semi-rural life.

Our trip took us to Prague – first time for Ben and the first time in 30 years for me – and I loved it just as much as last time, even though we landed in the middle of a heatwave. (It’s a land-locked city made largely of stone and it was HOT!)

We headed out very early on our first morning to see the Charles Bridge before the crowds (and the heat of the day). It was us, a handful of fellow travellers and two bridal couples having their wedding photos taken. And the neighbourhood across the river might be the prettiest in Prague.

I met with one of my European agents and my Czech publishers at Grada (we filmed some promo videos), then signed copies of my books at the famous Palace of Books.

Hradčany Castle was a highlight, even though it was 40°C the day of our walking tour.

And we indulged in the local beer and cuisine – everything from Michelin-star dining at Field (where we celebrated our 20th anniversary) to wursts at the park, and even the best Mexican food since we were in Mexico

This was also a research trip – I will be setting my 10th book for Boldwood in this gorgeous city and I am already in the planning stages – so we saw as much of the city as we could in a week.

Next up… Part 2: Greece!

Catching up with Author Laura Carter

Thrilled to welcome Laura Carter, one of my author gal pals, to Off the Beaten Track today, celebrating the release of her latest novel Out of Bounds.

LOVE this cover – the chemistry! Let’s find out more…

Welcome Laura and happy publication day! Tell us what inspired you to write Out of Bounds

Thank you! So, Out of Bounds, though a standalone novel, is set in the same world as my previous sports romance book, A Rookie Mistake. I was desperate to return to the world of Sunshine Ranch (the not-for-profit carer respite owned by the Quinn family), as well as the San Antonio Bears American football team. In A Rookie Mistake, we are introduced to a show pony, cinnamon roll, Tanner Pace, and I knew as soon as I met him (without meaning to sound entirely unhinged about my fictional friend) that I wanted to write his story. We also met Annie Quinn in A Rookie Mistake – young, single mom and little sister of Tanner’s teammate, Colton. It was already set to be the perfect storm, and I couldn’t wait to weather it with these characters. What surprised me, and I hadn’t realized about the book until it was complete, was how the book also became a story of a young woman’s strength and the influence of good men as fathers and father figures. How sometimes families can be unexpectedly found and unconventional. Ultimately, love of all kinds is the inspiration behind Out of Bounds.

I love that you’re writing in the same world and giving Tanner and Annie their own story. What do you hope readers take away from Out of Bounds?

I hope readers are left feeling light and fluffy by the end of Out of Bounds. It has depth and heart but is ultimately intended to be a feel-good and swoon worthy sports romance, with incredible but fallible main characters we can all love and respect. As well as some pretty funny driving lesson and animal excrement disasters!

I know you’re an avid reader as well as an author. What’s your most recent read that you’d like to recommend?

Swept Away by Beth O’Leary. It’s a slight pivot on Beth’s usual romcoms (which I adore), with a suspense element. After a one-night-stand on a houseboat, the characters are swept out to sea. It’s full of love, comedy and a fight for survival. Pure escapism. I loved it!

Beth is brilliant. I think The Switch is my fave of hers. I’ll have to check out Swept Away.

What would you say has been your biggest author highlight over the last year?

My young children finally realising what Mummy does as a job. They’ve started proudly telling their teachers and friends that Mummy is an author. It’s incredible to think they’re growing up seeing a hardworking mum but also learning that life is their oyster. Their dreams and passions can become their work. It has been a real life moment for me.

That’s awesome and I totally agree about instilling that belief in the next generation. My niece is a budding author and I love that she sees it as a career option.

Can you tell us what you’re working on now, or is it a secret?

I’ve recently finished writing the third book in the Wild Card series – another standalone sports romance to follow A Rookie Mistake and Out of Bounds. This time, we’re going to New York and the world of professional ice hockey, though we’ve already briefly met the characters 😉. The Game Plan releases in November. It’s fun and high energy. It was a blast to write and I hope readers will love it! And there will absolutely be cameos from A Rookie Mistake and Out of Bounds.

Brilliant. Well, thank you for telling us about the series and I just know this one will fly!

More about Out of Bounds

A BRAND NEW spicy sports romance ❣️🏈🌶️perfect for fans of Elle Kennedy, Chelsea Curto and Tessa Bailey! ✨

Every book in the Wild Card series can be read as a standalone.

Tropes: 🏈 football romance 💕 friends to lovers 🤠 cowboys 👶 single mother 📚 working for a better life 🌶 spice

She knows better than to fall for another football player – especially her brother’s best friend…

As a single mother, Annie Quinn knows she should steer clear of football players, if her son’s absent father is anything to go by. Determined to prove she can raise Nelson on her own, she’s decided to go back to school. There’s just one problem: she refuses to rely on her brother Colton for rides into the city.

Tanner Pace has always known Annie Quinn is strictly off limits. Colton is his teammate and best friend, so she’s more like a sister. When he offers to teach her to drive, it’s just to help out a friend. At least, that’s what he tells himself. Because these days, Annie has transformed into a strong and independent woman – one he can’t seem to stay away from.

Somewhere between unpredictable drives and slow Texas sunsets, sparks fly and Annie forgets why she decided never to trust a sports star again.

As much as Tanner wants something to happen, he knows it can’t. Annie is his best friend’s sister. Completely, undeniably out of bounds… but are some rules meant to be broken?

Catching up with Author Amy Andrews

I’m delighted to welcome Amy Andrews to Off the Beaten Track to celebrate her latest book, Wild and Wanted, which is out tomorrow. And look at that cover! Swoon!

Amy, welcome! Tell us what inspired you to write Wild & Wanted.

I heard the Red Clay Strays singing a live version of their song ‘Wondering Why’ and I loved it so much I played it on repeat for an hour! Needless to say it got the creative juices flowing and my country guy/city girl took form and shape!

Oh, I love when inspiration strikes like that. And if readers want to watch the music video, they can do that here.

Tell us a little more about you. When did you start writing seriously?

I started writing seriously for publication in my 20s but I wasn’t offered a contract until my early 30s, so I did a very long apprenticeship 😊 This was back in the days before indie publishing but in all honestly, it was a good grounding in honing my craft.

You’re so prolific, having written more than 90 books, both with traditional publishers and as an indie author. What do you love most about being an author?

I love it most when I write ‘The End’ and I know I’ve given my characters their HEA and my readers that lovely happy sigh. I also love hanging out with readers and other authors at events!

It’s a great feeling, finishing a story, and I couldn’t agree more about the joy of meeting other book lovers at events. I always come away inspired and re-energised.

Can you tell us what you’re working on now, or is it a secret?

I’m working on book 2 of the Redemption Valley Ranch series – Rough & Ready. It’s a ‘woman in peril’ trope, which I’ve adored ever since I watched the first Terminator movie all those years ago!

Oh, that sounds fun. As a reader, I’m in my cowboy era, so I’m really looking forward to this new series.

What do you hope readers will take away from Wild & Wanted?

I want for them the same thing I want for all of my readers, to have had a good time and finished with a smile on their face. Life is busy and I consider it a privilege that a reader might decide to spend some of their precious down time with a book of mine so I want them to be really freaking glad they did.😊

So true! I’m always honoured when I hear back from readers who love my books.

My thoughts on Wild & Wanted

This is the perfect read for readers who like their romance with a side of sexy cowboy (yeehaw!). A fast-paced, super steamy, romance so much fun. I devoured it.

Readers, here’s a little more about Amy

And more about Wild & Wanted

A broken down cowboy. A star on the rise. The ride of their lives.

Clay Calhoun used to be the hottest bad boy on the professional rodeo circuit but a career-ending injury has dragged him back to Wyoming and the family dude ranch he escaped a decade ago. The washed-up bronc rider doesn’t want to babysit tourists pretending to be cowboys while he’s licking his wounds and dodging regrets. Then a record label drops a city girl straight into his pasture.

Reluctantly famous country music sensation Stephanie “Stevie” Everhart needs authentic cowgirl cred to go with her shiny golden Grammy, so her label sends her and her helicopter mother to Wyoming for a month to get some mud on her boots. Unfortunately for Clay he’s given the job of teaching her how to ride a horse.

Clay doesn’t do babysitting. Stevie doesn’t do bad boys. But beneath those big, reckless skies, good girl Stevie discovers a streak of wild she’s never dared unleash and Clay finds grit and warmth that slip past his defences. What starts as image control ignites into sparks neither planned.

Who knew going a little wild meant you might just end up wanted for keeps.

When Tommy Met Ally

If you’ve read My Big Greek Island Ex-scape, here’s a little something for you – a bonus scene that happens long before the book begins…

I almost didn’t go out the night my life changed forever.

But with my best mate, Duncan, standing in my doorway giving me shit about studying on a Friday night – going on and on for at least five minutes – I finally relented. If only to shut him up.

Turf Tavern was stuffed to the gills that night, but Duncan pushed through the crowd to the bar to get us each a pint while I did my best to stake my claim a square foot of floor near the back.

A Britney Spears song came on – ‘Womaniser’ – and that’s when I saw her. A gorgeous girl about my age – long dark-blonde hair, heart-shaped face, enormous blue eyes, and her body… she was tiny in stature but curvy and I couldn’t take my eyes off her.

Neither could anyone else – unsurprising considering she was standing on table belting out the song. Badly. She couldn’t sing to save her life, and she only knew half the words, filling in the gaps with made up lyrics and gibberish. But none of that stopped and she performed the hell out of that song.

When it ended, the crowd erupted with hoots, whistles, and cheers, she took a bow, and I rushed over to offer my hand to help her off the table.

She locked eyes with mine and I swear to god my heart stopped for at least five seconds. Then she took my hand and carefully stepped onto a chair then the floor. I towered over her, even though she was wearing these super high heels.

‘That was amazing,’ I said, stooping to talk in her ear.

‘I know,’ she replied, and I burst out laughing.

‘Can I buy you a drink?’

She was about to answer when Duncan found me, shoving a pint at me and sending a tiny wave of lager onto the floor.

‘Sorry, mate,’ he said, then he noticed her – the girl I’d already fallen in love with – and a sly grin spread across his face. ‘Hi, I’m Duncan.’

He stuck out his hand and she shook it.

‘I’m Ally, and your friend just asked if he could buy me a drink.’

Duncan’s gaze swung in my direction, then he looked between me and her – twice.

‘Ah. Well, then all yours, mate,’ he said before patting me on the arm and disappearing into the crowd.

When I turned back to the girl – Ally – she was watching me with an amused look on her face. I shook my head quickly to clear it.

‘Sorry, uh… let’s get you one of these, eh?’ I asked, holding up the pint.

She broke into a smile that lit her from within, and the entire Turf Tavern – the people, the music, the bar – receded into the background. There was just Ally and me. I was a goner.

‘Lead the way.’

I didn’t want to lose her in the throng – or ever – so I reached for her hand. Her tiny hand fitted into mine perfectly and I led her towards the bar where I asked her what she wanted.

‘A pint’s good,’ she replied – not a white wine, not a vodka soda – a pint. If I hadn’t already been falling hard for this girl, that might’ve sealed the deal.

While we waited to get served, I spent every second trying to think of something clever and interesting to say and failing miserably.

When we each had a drink, she signalled for us to move to end of the bar and I followed.

‘Cheers,’ she said, tapping her pint glass against mine.

‘Cheers.’

I watched in awe as she drank deeply, then wiped her mouth with the back of her hand. I took a sip, sensing I’d need to keep my wits about me.

‘So where did you learn to do that?’ I asked.

‘Drink from a glass? I’ve been doing that since I was about two.’

I sniggered, taking the jibe good-naturedly. ‘I meant the performance,’ I said.

‘Ahh, my sister, Claude. She’s been sneaking me into pubs and clubs since I was sixteen. My first time was a duet.’

‘She sounds a bit wild.’

‘Oh, she’s a lot wild. You have no idea.’ And that was coming from the girl who’d just performed to the entire bar.

‘So, you’re studying here?’ I asked. It was a fair assumption but not everyone in Oxford who was my age was a student.

‘Yep – English Lit and PPE.’

‘PPE?’ I asked.

‘Philosophy, Politics, and Economics,’ she replied, giving me a funny look. I probably should have known that. ‘What about you?’ she asked, eyeing me up as if my appearance alone would reveal the answer.

‘Engineering,’ we said at the exact same time.

She nodded at me knowingly – some might call smugly.

‘How did you…?’ I asked with a laugh.

‘Engineering students have a certain way about them.’

My brows shot up. ‘Is that so? Should I be insulted by that?’

‘Absolutely not. Without engineers, the world would literally fall apart.’

She took another drink of her pint, her eyes fixed on mine, and I basked in the glow of her compliment.

I knew right then that I never wanted the night to end.

And if that has you intrigued and you haven’t read My Big Greek Island Ex-scape, check it out here.

A (publication) day in the life of an author

Today is publication day for my 14th book.

14th!

Talk about a pinch-me moment – especially when seven years I was still in the querying trenches, waiting for my one yes. It came on January 31, 2019 and you can read about it here.

But back to now… what does a publication day look like?

The lead up

My author copies arrived last week and it’s always a thrill to do the unboxing.

Me holding the book excited

Check out my unboxing video here. With thanks to my Aunty Candyce for being DoP for the shoot.

Then I record the publication day video (super fun this time) and take promo photos of my book. This is my fave from this year’s photo shoot featuring Coco (wearing black) and Pumpkin (wearing orange). The puppies aren’t mine (I wish) but were visiting at the time with my aunt and uncle.

2 dogs with the book

In the lead up to publication, I keep an eye on NetGalley reviews from early readers, such as these two. Early reviews for this one have been terrific and I’m thrilled that Ally and her adventures in Greece are resonating with readers. After wrapping up a 5-book series, this was a departure for me and I really got to play, especially with the sub-plot and the heat level. If you want to learn more about my inspiration for this book, you can read about it here.

Two 5-star reviews

I also keep an eye on pre-sales, rankings and charts.

Today

Well, I’d intended to sleep in but at 4:30 this morning, my over-active (menopausal) brain tossed up THE BEST plot idea for my work-in-progress. By 5:00, it had grown legs (and arms and a torso), so I got up and went straight to my desk to sketch out the next two chapters.

Next up is social media, posting across my accounts. You can check those posts out on Instagram, Facebook and Threads (and follow me if you don’t already). But part of the marketing for this book is that Ally Novak is the Divorced Diva, an influencer and we created her social media grids.

While getting back to writing Book 16 (Book 15 is already in the editing stages), I check socials and sales throughout the day.

And these beautiful flowers arrived from my publisher Boldwood Books.

I love getting flowers, but publication day flowers are super special because they celebrate the 100s (if not 1000s) of hours that goes into writing, editing and launching a book.

And this evening, we went for a publication day dinner at one of our new locals Flame Trees. As always the food was sublime and thank you to my darling Ben for spoiling me rotten.

So, there you have it – part celebration, part workday and all of it living a dream come true.

Thank you to my editor, Emily, and my agent, Lina, and the teams at Boldwood Books and Ulverscroft (who publish my audio and large print versions).

And thank you for reading my books. It’s a pleasure and a privilege to be an author, but I only get to do it because of you.

Who is the Divorced Diva?

When the idea for this book first came to me, I’d imagined a different heroine – a woman in her 50s finding love again after a long marriage and a nasty divorce.

But when I sat down to write, Ally Novak – the Divorced Diva – barged in, fully formed and impossible to ignore. She’s bright, gutsy, tenacious, and has more confidence in her little finger than most people have in their whole body.

Only in her mid-30s, she has three marriages behind her: the boy she met at uni and fell hopelessly in love with, the American rockstar she tumbled into bed with, and the silver-fox billionaire who whisked her away on an endless holiday.

After all three marriages ended in divorce, Ally convinced herself that happily ever afters belong in romcoms and fairy tales – not real life.

She started a blog, lamenting the loss of her hopeless romanticism, leading to an Instagram account which slowly gained traction before catapulting her into online stardom, and now she’s the Divorced Diva – breakup whisperer, brand ambassador, and champion for singles everywhere.

The Diva’s ethos centres on self-care, sex positivity, the art of saying no, and moving forward, rather than dwelling on the past.

And behind every endorsement deal and red-carpet appearance is a charitable endeavour that supports singles to reclaim their lives and start fresh – because giving back is Ally’s true passion.

Or is it?

As an author, it’s incredibly fun to create a character that I adore, then (temporarily) make them miserable all in the pursuit of that elusive HEA.

And for Ally, I figured I’d double the trouble.

So, I sent her to a remote Greek Island resort where she encounters two of her ex-husbands and embarks on a series of romantic mishaps and mysterious misadventures in this fast-paced and sexy romcom, leaving Ally wondering if she’s secretly been cast in the next season of The White Lotus.

I had an absolute blast writing My Big Greek Island Ex-scape and I hope you have as much fun reading it. Oh, and there’s a playlist on Spotify! Have a listen.

Praise for My Big Greek Island Ex-scape

New Year’s Absolutions 2026

If you’re new here, you haven’t misread the title of this post. You see, I don’t make resolutions every year, I make ‘absolutions’, where I absolve myself of ‘must dos’ that won’t serve me.

I’ve only just realised I didn’t do my absolutions this time last year. We were in Mexico this time last year with close friends from Seattle days who live there. We had a small apartment, had immersed ourselves in Mexico life, and I was writing madly. Maybe I was too ‘in the moment’ to think as far ahead as the rest of 2025.

And I certainly didn’t foresee how the year ended, with us buying a house in a small coastal town in the southwest of Western Australia. That’s right, the apartment-dwelling city lovers who take off for a year at a time to travel are putting down roots! Didn’t have that one on my BINGO card, but it feels so right.

My new writing space

And hilariously, when I look back on previous years’ absolutions, I discover that I often end up doing them anyway at some point. Like in 2019, when I absolved myself from joining Instagram (hah!), going grey (proud silver vixen here) and getting into VR, which I did voraciously during the pandemic.

Anyway, back to this year’s absolutions. In 2026, I hereby absolve myself from:

1. Becoming a content creator/influencer

In 2021, I absolved myself from jumping on the TikTok train and this absolution tops my list for 2026. It takes a lot of work to create content for social media and with the ever-changing algorithms, it seems like blind luck whether a post goes viral or not. And because my job is large-scale, long-form content creation (as in, writing books), that part of my brain is BIZZ-EEE. (Aside: I take all my hats off to my author friends, who create these super engaging videos for readers. I’m in awe that you fit it in.)

2. Giving up on my side projects

Like many (if not most) authors, I have multiple side projects on the go as well as writing my contracted books. There’s the co-authored sexy, twisty thriller which is still looking for a home, the Australian-set ‘book of my heart’, a novel inspired by a tough time in my life that I’m seeking an Aussie publisher for, and What the Fuck, Menopause? The ABCs and WTFs of Menopause, a laugh-out-loud picture book for menopausal women.

Actually, WTF, Menopause? is more than one book. In my mind, it’s a brand and the picture book is just the first product in the line. Since mid-2024, it’s been to acquisitions THREE times with three different publishers on three continents. We’ve been so close to getting a deal, one of the publishers showed me paper stock and illustrations by their choice of artist.

But alas, no deal. As Gen-X storms into menopause, proclaiming loudly that we are not silently accepting the shitstorm it brings, now is the time for this book – and the brand. I just need a fellow Gen-Xer, one with the clout and reach to bring this dream to fruition, to give it a fair shake, because the publishers are still a little hesitant to dive headlong into the menopausal mire. One even asked me to go away and become an influencer then come back to them when I was (see absolution #1 for why I declined).

With all of these projects (and the others I haven’t mentioned here) I could just shrug, say ‘oh well’ and shelve them indefinitely, but I’m doing that. No frigging way, because I believe in all of them and I’m positive that one day, their respective moments will come. As an author, I’m building a portfolio career. I’ll continue to write romcoms, but there’s a lot more I have to say.

(And yes, I know I’m cheating here using a double negative 😉)

3. Worrying about money

This will be hard – very – because even when I was working fulltime and earning royalties, I worried about money. Now that I’m a fulltime author, reliant on the inconsistent and fickle world of publishing for most my income – and we’ve bought a house – I’m mindful that worrying could consume me if I let it. It’s a mindset shift – a tough one, but one I’m consciously making. Besides, I’ve got other irons in the fire, ways to supplement my income, and I’m also hopeful that one or more of my side projects will get its moment in 2026. That or one of my romcoms becomes a bestseller.

4. Joining a team

Our new hometown is small, but social, something we’ve already embraced as we get to know our neighbours and make friends with other couples. It’s also a town brimming with teams – they even have dragon boat racing here. But I’m not really a team kinda gal. It’s not that I can’t play nicely with others, but I suck at ball sports and I’m generally uncoordinated, so yoga and weight training are more my jam. I do want to engage with the local community, but I’ll stick to less physically demanding endeavours, like book club and coffee dates.

I think that’s all for 2026. Drop a comment below with your absolutions and I hope you have a very safe, happy and healthy new year.
